A police pursuit through Sydney’s west ended dramatically in the early hours of Wednesday morning when a utility vehicle crashed into a power pole at Berkshire Park, leaving the driver hospitalized.
The incident began shortly after 2 a.m. when officers attached to Blacktown Police Area Command were conducting patrols following concerns for the welfare of a 32-year-old man believed to be in the Blacktown area.
Police located the man driving a Toyota utility near a shopping centre on Patrick Street in Blacktown. According to investigators, the driver allegedly sped away when officers approached and failed to stop when directed, prompting police to initiate a pursuit.
The chase continued through several parts of the Blacktown district before officers successfully deployed road spikes in an effort to bring the vehicle to a halt. Police later terminated the pursuit after the spikes were activated.
Only minutes later, emergency services were called to the intersection of Richmond Road and Llandilo Road after reports of a crash.
When officers arrived, they found the Toyota had left the roadway and collided with a power pole.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the driver at the scene before transporting him to Westmead Hospital for medical assessment. Authorities later confirmed the man was in a stable condition.
The crash scene remained under police examination throughout the morning as investigators worked to establish the full sequence of events leading up to the collision.
No other injuries have been reported.
Police have launched an investigation into both the pursuit and the circumstances surrounding the crash. As part of standard procedure, officers will review available evidence, including vehicle movements, pursuit decisions, and witness accounts.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers.
